One of the things that I found hard about is probably weather compound is ionic or covalent.  I over came this difficulty by just going over notes and noticing that covalent compounds have two non-metals.An example of covalent compound is covalent compound is H2O.
Ionic compound is metal with non metal. For example NaCl.
